Song number 123.02
Known across Australia and internationally for “Daisy Jane” and her latest single “Here On The Road” Susan Lily is forging an unforgettable and unique path towards mass appeal. Her first love is the stage and the bubbly entertainer has been treading the boards as an entertainer way before she started singing her own compositions.
It all began with her foray into standup comedy at the turn of the century. A hard mistress, it gave Susan the opportunity to hone her skills with an audience. It taught her that to own a stage was paramount to an engaging and memorable experience. She’s been doing that ever since with tales of her home life in outback NSW, her travels, intertwined amongst her songs.
This “voice” began her musical journey in 2003 when Susan joined a coverband and realised that comedy was only a stepping stone to where she really belonged. In 2005 she travelled interstate with only 3 original songs to compete in the Gympie Muster’s Maton Talent Quest. Though fairly green she did come home with a 2nd place prize in one of her heats.
Inspired by this she went on to engage the services of Michael Cristiano (formerly of Fisk and Christian) and Paul Norton (solo artist/The Runners). Through a mentoring process the initial stages of a solid songwriting career began. Given Susan’s quirky nature it was decided by her team that GOT THE MONKEY OFF MY BACK was to be her first single. This was released nationally via the NFS distribution CD and opened up new territory for Susan.
The release was in December 2006 and by the time she arrived in Tamworth for the Country Music Festival in 2007 her single had been played up and down and around the coast of Australia on many community stations. This included a run on Nick Erby’s CMR and addition to the HOT FM playlist in Mildura.
That was the next stop, Mildura. A successful applicant to the Mildura Country Music Festival saw our gal travel up the country to perform as a bonafide artist in September/October 2007. By this stage the song was in the HOT FM top 100 reaching the pinnacle of Number 32. During that week much experience was gained and networks created; some of which have continued to this day.
A popular live performer in inner city Melbourne, she oft heard this comment from audiences: “I don’t normally like country, but I like yours”
The call came from fans for an album to be made which only took 4 years to get together. Songs from Susan’s life experience intermingled with those of a lighter nature came together for launching in July 2011. Fully funded by Susan, “Butterfly” remains a key factor in the broadening fanbase and music industry relationships.
